Canon HV30
Yesterday, I posted pictures taken with my cell phone. Honestly, I’m still suprised by the quality I can get from something that is not even supposed to take picture in the first place. And this phone is not the new expensive gadget, it’s the kind of phone they give you for free when you agree to get stuck with a 24 months contract.
Since spring, I miss the fun to shoot with a SLR camera. While searching to buy a new toy, I learned that you can now buy a decent HD camcorder for 800$, cheaper than a Canon Rebel. So this is what I did, last week I bought what is probably the best consumer HD camera on the market: the Canon HV30. And I love it.
By reading the forums (great users community by the way), I learned it was possible to add a 35mm adapter to this camera to shoot with SLR lenses. I also learned how to shoot, capture, edit and compress using a 24p workflow. Here is a small piece of footage that I used to test my workflow. Please, open the vimeo page to see it in HD, as vimeo embeds only Low Definition versions.
Today, I realise I might never pay again for a still camera. So from now on, I will try to document my life with moving pictures instead, and if I see something weird and interesting while walking down the street, I’ll take my cellphone out of my pocket to grab a quick decent picture.
